T Nagar
Thyagaraya Nagar, or T Nagar as it is commonly known, is a testament to Chennai's early urban planning. Developed between 1923 and 1925 under the Madras Presidency government, the Raja of Panagal led this initiative, transforming what was once East Mambalam into a well-planned urban area. Named after P. Thyagaraya Chetty, the area was carefully designed with streets, parks, and localities named after key officials, making it a symbol of meticulous urban planning. The design was inspired by European urban layouts, a departure from the usual planning norms of that time. For instance, Panagal Park mirrors the Arc De Triomphe, and Pondy Bazaar resembles the Parisian boulevards like the Champs-Élysées.
Today, T. Nagar is a vibrant part of Chennai, serving as both a commercial and residential hub. It is surrounded by various neighborhoods, each adding its unique cultural aspects. To the North is Nungambakkam, known for its upscale areas and businesses. Teynampet to the East is a mix of homes and businesses. Nandanam and C.I.T. Nagar to the South-East and South, and West Mambalam and Kodambakkam to the West are residential areas with entertainment options.
Initially a residential area, T. Nagar has evolved into a top shopping destination. Its strategic position, approximately 10 km from Chennai Airport and 8 km from Chennai Central railway station, coupled with the presence of the Mambalam railway station, part of the Chennai Suburban Railway Network, ensures excellent connectivity and facilitates seamless travel within the city. The area is famous for its many saree and jewellery shops like Pothys, Nalli Silks, and Saravana Stores, attracting shoppers looking for quality traditional items. The stretch between Duraiswamy Road and T. Nagar Bus Stand is known for its high-end real estate, further highlighting the area’s commercial importance.
Adjacent to T. Nagar is Pondy Bazaar, another commercial center linked by Thyagaraya Road. Known for its variety of shops selling everything from clothes to electronics, Pondy Bazaar complements T.
