The geographical location of Kodambakkam is advantageously located at the coordinates of 13.0481 N latitude and 80.2214 E longitude and is a vibrant neighborhood in the western part of Chennai city. It's strategically positioned amidst several other prominent localities. To its east lies Nungambakkam, while West Mambalam and T. Nagar form its southern boundary. Vadapalani marks its western edge, and to the north, it's bordered by Choolaimedu. The southwestern boundary is shared with K. K. Nagar and Ashok Nagar. One of the notable landmarks near Kodambakkam is Fort St. George, which is approximately 8 kilometers away. This historic fort, built by the British East India Company in 1644, is a testament to Chennai's rich colonial history.

The origin of the name 'Kodambakkam' is indeed fascinating and shrouded in mystery. One interpretation suggests a connection to the snake deity, Karkodagan, adding a mythological dimension to the neighbourhood. Another interpretation translates it to 'Ghoda Bagh'. The theory is that Kodambakkam might have been a place where horses were kept, possibly for the Nawab of the Carnatic during the 17th and 18th centuries. However, this ambiguity surrounding the name 'Kodambakkam' only adds to its allure.

The Iconic Flyover:

The Kodambakkam flyover, built in 1967, is more than just a concrete structure. It's a symbol of the neighborhood's journey through time, linking its historical roots with its contemporary identity.

This flyover, one of the first in Chennai, was designed to alleviate the heavy traffic at the Kodambakkam railway crossing, which was one of the city's busiest points. The proposal for the bridge was first put forward in the late 1950s and was eventually undertaken by the Madras State Highways Department in September 1963. The project was completed two years later, in September 1965.

Today, the 623-meter-long Kodambakkam flyover not only ensures smooth transportation but also stands as a symbol of the neighborhood's dynamism. It connects various parts of the city, making Kodambakkam a well-connected and accessible neighborhood.
