The Old Mahabalipuram Road is a major arterial road that goes up to 45 kilometers and connects the Madhya Kailash temple in Adyar to Mahabalipuram situated in the Kanchipuram district. This is a busy location and an aspiring residential destination known as Chennai's IT corridor. The presence of IT Parks, connection to strategic locations, and anticipated infrastructural developments have elevated this location to the status of Chennai's main growth corridor.
Until the end of the last decade, it was a quiet neighborhood in Chennai's outskirts. The Tamil Nadu government initiated one of the most ambitious initiatives of developing a full-fledged IT corridor along this stretch due to the availability of ample land and proximity to residential areas such as Adyar, ECR, Velachery, and Thiruvanmiyur. This began the transformation of OMR, which has never been the same since. Today, OMR is one of Chennai's most desirable neighborhoods, brimming with high-end residential and commercial developments.
Adyar was once the northernmost point of the city. One small metal road connecting Adyar and Mahabalipuram! There was just one automobile that could move for tourists and locals, and the rest was a dense forest. You can feel an unsettling silence following you as you travel on the desolate road.
This was the director's favourite road. Fighting scenes or smugglers' hideouts were filmed here in black and white. Buses were few, and cycling was prevalent. OMR has been flipped upside down into one of Chennai's most lively places. In 1987, OMR gained popularity as a route station connecting the Kotturpuram bridge to Mahabalipuram, one of Chennai's major tourist attractions, securing a firm link to Taramani and beyond. When the new East Coast Road adjacent to it was finished in 1998, the Mahabalipuram Road was renamed old.
The construction of the IIT at Guindy, built in a 600-acre of forest area in the 1960s, where the Rajiv Gandhi Salai road now begins, represented a shift in the decentralization of the city center and land usage. Apart from the well-known universities, the corridor was initially anchored by a plethora of institutions that drew a lively audience. Because of the intellectual proof combined with a massive influx of migrants migrating to educational destinations, the beginning of the IT corridor was added. However, the early 1990s economic liberalization served as the backbone of this initiative.
The building of Tidel Park and the IT park in SIPCOT in 2000 gradually changed the fortunes of the location. Today, OMR, one of the city's crown jewels, offers a variety of services to its residents, including connectivity, social infrastructure, and return on investment, to name a few.
The OMR runs parallel to East Coast Road and enables a convenient commute to places along the OMR section as well as areas outside of the city limits. The Thoraipakkam-Pallavaram radial route offers a convenient commute from Thoraipakkam, which is located along the OMR section.
The city's major train station is about 35 kilometers away and can be reached by the Rajiv Gandhi Salai IT motorway. Guindy railway station, which is linked to the local railway network, is only 15 minutes from OMR. The international airport is 25 minutes from the OMR and may be reached through the GST road.
Because of the huge number of IT parks and well-known enterprises, OMR is now one of the city's main employment nodes. The Madhya Kailash to Siruseri corridor accounts for three-quarters of the state's software exports. Tidel Park, SIPCOT IT Park, and Futura Tech Park are among them. TCS, Wipro Technologies, and HCL Technologies are among the IT firms that operate from here.
Technological breakthroughs, infrastructure development, and competitive rental rates enticed businesses from different industries to locate their offices along the OMR. The Secondary Business District was formed as a result of the merging of varied industries along the zone, giving not only a strong economic spine but also an avenue of job and economic wealth that is not limited to a single sector.
Because of the great growth of localities along the OMR, the suburbs from this region were brought inside the boundaries of the Chennai corporation, improving their access to basic infrastructure.
The presence of many major IT parks along the OMR has also paved way for the ultimate social infrastructure development which now boasts some of the reputable Schools, Colleges and Hospitals in the city. Notable schools are Vellore International School, Chettinad Sarvalokaa Education, and Gateway- The Complete School. In addition, there are fully equipped medical facilities such as Apollo Speciality Hospital, Supreme Hospital, Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute, supermarkets, and entertainment zones at the location. Which have got this area bussing and listed it on top as the most desirable location to live in Chennai.
Despite its location on the outskirts of Chennai, the OMR stands out as the city's best rapid growth corridor. Multiple planned and ongoing infrastructure upgrades have strengthened the future of this community. The suggested infrastructure development initiatives will improve connectivity along the OMR region. Among the planned plans are:
1. Phase 2 Metro: The second phase of the Chennai Metro, spanning 118.9 kilometers and covering territories from Madhavaram to SIPCOT, will primarily benefit the communities along the OMR.
2. Multi-deck elevated corridor: The Tamil Nadu government has planned a three-deck elevated route that will connect to the metro rail.
3. Chennai peripheral road project: The proposed road will connect four National Highways (NH5, NH205, NH4, and NH45) and eight state highways, enhancing seamless connection from the suburbs to the city core.
